The Career Path
A career that builds futures
What does a building surveyor actually do?
Most people are familiar with architects and builders, but they often overlook one of the most critical individuals in the process: the building surveyor.
Put simply, we are like the referees for buildings. We don’t design the building, and we don’t lay the bricks; instead, we ensure that everyone plays by the safety rules. We interpret the "minefield" of building laws and the Building Code of Australia (BCA) to make sure every structure is safe, energy-efficient and accessible for everyone.
Our role isn't about ticking boxes – it's about problem-solving. We work with developers from the initial design through to final inspection to ensure that "big, expensive problems" are solved before they ever happen.

The work is interesting
No two days are the same
Forget about a boring desk job. Building surveying offers a massive variety of challenges. One day you might be inspecting a heritage-listed jail or a massive stadium, and the next you're at a cutting-edge hospital or a high-rise apartment.
Case study: The "Lighthouse" problem
Imagine a client wants to build a structure that has never been seen before – like a modern lighthouse on a precarious cliff. As a surveyor, you don’t say "no." You use your knowledge of safety and materials to find a way to make it happen legally and safely. You are the one who turns "impossible" designs into safe realities.
